One of my wedding clients, Emily Morgan Smith just sent me an email letting me know that one of my images was selected to be featured in the weddings section of the NY Times. As an avid reader of the NY Times, Emily decided to submit an image that I took on her wedding day when the paper asked readers to share an image of their non-traditional wedding shoes. They selected the photograph to lead the slideshow, and it is also the selected shot on the wedding celebration home page.
I tend to attract such unique, eclectic, artistic, free-thinking and, shall we say, non-traditional brides (with non-traditional shoes!). Emily is one of the best examples of this; she and Andrew had a very beautiful and unique wedding ceremony, writing their own vows and sealing the deal with a handshake before their kiss. Out of the over 200 weddings I have photographed, their wedding ceremony was the first to have family members stand and read marriage advice given to the couple; it was heartfelt and funny, making for a most memorable ceremony. As a green choice, Emily chose to display potted plants as her reception table decor and potted plants in baskets to carry as the bouquets, including artistic flowers made of paper. I think it’s great when a couple’s personalities really show through in their creative wedding day choices (and of course these choices make for great photos, too, so I may be partial). One of my other favorite moments from Emily and Andrew’s wedding was their first dance to “Fly Me to the Moon,” and they actually did a choreographed dance. Emily told me she loved the look of quirky old wedding photos, so, at the end of the night, we remade our own vintage 1900’s wedding photograph in sepia tone with the couple looking stark and posed (as couples had to stand perfectly still in order be captured in focus by the vintage cameras).
